In this germaine reinvention of an unlikely friendship story, Adam and Cariño meet when Adam’s husband gifts him Spanish lessons online. As their lessons progress, student and teacher develop a complicated emotional bond catalyzed by tragedy. Actor Natalie Morales’s directorial debut (which collaborator Mark Duplass co-writes and co-produces) is a clever, highly focused, digitally intimate investigation of life behind and between screens. Stellar performances and long-distance platonic chemistry illuminate the value of queer friendship and creative allyship. Balancing trauma and humor, loneliness and partnership, compassion and distance, Language Lessons is an apt tribute to a time in which our very understanding of connection is shifting beneath us.
